Martyn Family History
The popular version of the Martin surname in Ireland is Martyn. It derives from the Latin name Martinus, which is a diminutive form of Mart-, the stem of the word for "war" (cf. Engl. "martial") and also the Roman god Mars. The meaning is usually rendered "of war", "warlike", or in reference to the god as "of Mars". It is the most common French surname.Select Audience

Ian Mooney
Hi. My great great grandmother Ann Martyn married my great great grandfather John Mooney in Tuam, Galway, Ireland in August 1935. Witnesses at the wedding were Stephen Martyn and Margaret Fitzpatrick. It has always been a rumour in my family that Ann was the niece of Richard Martin, the animal rights campaigner. Any help in finding out about Ann would be greatly appreciated.
